Social media monitoring review 2010 – download the final report
Over the last few months we’ve been conducting an in-depth review of the leading social media monitoring tools in conjunction with our sister company, FreshMinds Research.
We’ve compared how Alterian, Brandwatch, Biz360, Neilsen Buzzmetrics, Radian6, Scoutlabs and Sysomos performed when monitoring conversations about global coffee brand Starbucks. We compared over 19,000 online conversations and have written about the following topics:
- The basics of social media monitoring
- How to set up the tools (search strings, comparison challenges and coverage)
- The location of social media conversations
- Social media monitoring and duplication
- Data latency and the tool with the most up-to-date results
- The problem with automated sentiment
If you’ve enjoyed our posts so far you can find a more detailed analysis of all these topics and more in our final report – “Turning Conversations into Insights: a Comparison of Social Media Monitoring Tools”.

Thank you kindly for this report. I’m a primary admin on the Social Media Club – Cleveland and will be sharing on our Facebook ‘Fan’ page (somehow ‘like’ page is just… wrong). Love your website, too, and will share it as well and gather you into my RSS Feed. Thanks for sharing.

Would be good to include the companies that drive these tools such as Moreover Technologies who also offer comprehensive reporting across Social media tracking share of voice, influencers, sentiment scoring and the basics.

thanks for putting the report together guys and for including Brandwatch.
Cheers

nb. i don’t know about the others, but Moreover doesn’t ‘drive’ Brandwatch, we do our own crawling so can get data more quickly

Katie / Giles – no problem and hope you find the report useful. We’d love your comments and reflections
3 June 2010, 9:39 pmMatt Rhodes:
Fareita – hello and thanks for the comment. We decided to review the tools from the perspective of somebody in a brand who was using the tool directly. In part because we work with a lot of people who implement the tools in this way but also to see how they would all fare in this kind of environment. A review of other tools and services would probably make a good follow-up report; I’ll pitch it to the team.
