Last week there were elections in Holland and at a particular moment 9 out of 10 global trending topics were Dutch. There was even a "Twitter debate" (http://www.rnw.nl/english/article/twitter-debate-–-dutch-tweets-dominate-today) Although the broadband penetration is not directly comparable with Social media usage, the fact that the Netherlands has the highest broadband penetration in the European Union gives some indication of how web savvy the Dutch are. Maybe it's the fact that "we" don't have a strong presence at Facebook that makes were not in the top 10? Like Orkut in Brazil, www.hyves.nl is the number one social media site in Holland with more than 10 million users on a total of 16 million people. Hyves is a Dutch initiative, privately owned so not owned by Google, Yahoo or whatever, I have strong doubts about this Nielsen report.
