The most popular platform is Twitter, with 65% of firms using this. Facebook and YouTube are next (54% and 50% respectively) with corporate blogs the least used (just 33% of firms surveyed)

Brands are definitely opening up. Most of the higher-profile examples are on the goofy side (Skittles), but there is a definite opportunity for a more sober experience.
There is a company called ThisMoment that provides a distribution platform for content across multiple social platforms, + mobile, and also creates a “community” for UGC and commentary. It seems to me that this is an area where lots of brands will end up; creating a “channel” around a product (etc.), and letting customers/”fans” interact while still embracing the web channels they already use. Interesting stuff.
Maybe not the most sober example, but they just did a channel for the new movie "Kick-Ass": http://kickass.thismoment.com/
Neat stuff.
Cheers,
Ben
