You are spot on about monitoring is easy, but it is what is done with the data that counts. Before any tool is chosen, one should have a social media strategy and measurable goals and objectives in place. Listening is great and much needed, but one needs to understand the motivating factors behind the tool.

Agree completely. Radian6 for instance is a great tool to use to monitor and gather the data but then additional analysis is still required to make the intelligence actionable. As far as engagement I understand that Brand Managers and Marketers are primarily doing this today but this may be something as SM volume increases that the customer service area takes a much bigger role in.

So very true - as a social media marketeer, one of the most frustrating things I find is the confusion caused inside organisations when people high up say "We're already doing social media, we've got a report that comes in each month" - but then all they do with it is file it away, safe in the (mistaken) knowledge that this is all they need to do. Then you get the poor folk whose job it is to prove the ROI of this report, which inevitably fails because they haven't got the skills or experience to interpret and build actions off the back of what it tells them.

So very true. The buzz is not enough. All the info you gather needs to call for an action.

Among other services I use is Wadja.com. These guys let you create what they call #Labels and automatically you have related to the Labels feeds (Youtube and Twitter included) filling your profile stream. They also let you send free and Premium SMS and emails. Pretty nice.

Keep on writing.
